Ajou holds the 'College of Engineering Freshmen Fair' [16.05.23] The 'Festival for All - Freshmen Fair,' which was co-hosted by the Department of Environmental and Safety Engineering, the Department of Civil System Engineering, and the Department of Transportation System Engineering under Ajou University, was held on the afternoon of May 18th at Woncheon Hall's Grand Auditorium. The Freshmen Fair was prepared as a part of the 'Hopeful Ajou' subject, which was newly introduced to help incoming students become familiar with the new environment and better plan for their four years at the University. The event was designed to assist them in forming a sense of unity with professors, seniors, and other students of their class and to get used to the class format focused on discussions, various activities, and participation. The Fair brought together 105 freshmen, seniors, and professors from three departments comprising a total of six teams – two teams from each department. Individual teams staged a variety of performances on that day after five weeks of preparation, including plays, musicals, singing (flash mob), and dances, covering six topics (college life, love, interpersonal relationship, wishes and dreams for the future, and employment). Young Jin Kim (freshman, Department of Transportation System Engineering) said, "It was great that I spent the last five weeks rehearsing a musical with classmates and upperclassmen, something I never experienced in high school. I am excited about my life as a university student." In his congratulatory message, Dean Sang Duk Lee of the College of Engineering said, "Professors in charge of the 'Hopeful Ajou' subject and active exchanges between freshmen and seniors made the Freshmen Fair possible. I hope that you have productive times at the University."

Professional baseball team KT Wiz invites Ajou family to its home game [16.05.20] The KT Wiz, which is a new professional baseball team based in Suwon, invited the Ajou family to the Teacher's Day Series. Ajou University President Dong Yeon Kim threw the first pitch and President Gyeong Jin Lee of the General Student Council served as the batter to open the game. About 700 Ajou people, including students, professors, and staff members from the University and the University Medical Center, were invited to the game between the KT Wiz and the LG Twins held on May 18th at the KT Wiz Park located in Jangan-gu, Suwon. A promotional video of Ajou was played on the stadium screen and the announcer interviewed President Kim before the game. Thundersticks representing the University were popular among spectators and Ajou's cheerleading team Cento staged a performance after the fifth inning. President Kim said, "Ajou University is seeking a 'Joyful Uprising' based on the values of challenge-taking, consideration for others, and a win-win spirit," adding, "I ask that the KT Wiz will also give not just wins, but happiness and joy to the citizens of Suwon." The event was a part of the KT Wiz 'Teacher's Day Series' (three-day home series vs. the LG Twins, May 17-19) to which the team invited students and other members from universities located in Suwon.

Ajou's Dong Wook Kim awarded at the student paper contest organized by the Korea Society of IT Services [16.05.20] Ajou University's Dong Wook Kim (junior, Department of e-Business) won an award at the '4th Research Paper Contest on Ways to Promote Industrial Convergence Products & Services,' which was hosted by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology and the Korea National Industrial Convergence Center and organized by the Korea Society of IT Services. The award-winning papers were selected through a two-round evaluation and the award ceremony was held on May 18th at the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies building. Undergraduate and graduate students from across the country participated in the contest and the awards were presented in the Industrial Convergence Products & Services category, the Industrial Convergence Business Models category, and the Policies and Institutions Regarding Industrial Convergence category. Dong Wook Kim (guiding professor Ju Young Kang) from the University had the honor of receiving an award for his paper entitled "A Comparative Study of Work Satisfaction by Industries Utilizing Topic Modeling: Based on Reviews on Job Planet." Kim authored the paper after conducting research based on his ideas from his regular classes and Undergraduate Research activities. The Korea Society of IT Services (KITS) was established in 2001 and has contributed to the development of policies, strategies, and technological expertise for the advancement of IT service industries in South Korea. KITS has 16 committees that hold a variety of seminars and symposiums with experts, including Overseas Market Research, IT Convergence Research, Policies & Regulation Research, Broadcasting & Communications Research, Security Research, and Payment Calculation Research.

The event, which was held on the afternoon of May 17th at Yulgok Hall's Grand Auditorium, was attended by about 500 people, including students from the University, Indonesian students in Korea, and high school students in Suwon. Also in attendance were local leaders, including Gyeonggi Provincial Governor Kyung Pil Nam and Suwon City Mayor Tae Young Yeom, and businesspeople. A delegation led by China's Communist Party Secretary Wang Li Tong for Caofeidian District visits Ajou [16.05.17] A delegation led by Communist Party Secretary Wang Li Tong for the Caofeidian District, China, visited Ajou University on the afternoon of May 17th. The 13-member delegation included officials from the Caofeidian District, the Synergy Development Institute for the Caofeidian District, the Korea-China-Japan Economic Development Association, and Bao Tong Company. President Dong Yeon Kim greeted the delegates in front of Yulgok Hall at around 2 p.m. upon their arrival and talked with them for about 20 minutes. President Kim said, "I feel sorry that I can have only a limited time with you because of the visit of the Indonesian President later today," adding, "I look forward to seeing the development of the Caofeidian District in person next time." Secretary Wang said, "I want to thank you for welcoming us despite your busy schedule," adding, "I would like to have extensive cooperation with Ajou University." The delegation then introduced the Caofeidian District in a meeting with Chairman Ho Seok Choo of the Daewoo Educational Foundation and President of the University Medical Center and Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs Hee Sug Ryu. Officials from the University also briefed the delegates about Ajou and the University Medical Center and the two sides discussed bilateral cooperation. Secretary Wang said, "The Caofeidian District is one of the areas with the highest potential for development in China," adding, "The local government is seeking a virtuous economic circle by actively attracting universities and improving the quality of education in general." President Dong Yeon Kim and students from Ajou participate in the Seoul Forum [16.05.15] President Dong Yeon Kim and about 230 students from Ajou University participated in the '2016 Seoul Forum,' which was organized by The Seoul Economic Daily. The Forum was held on May 11th and the 12th at the Shilla Hotel under the theme 'Artificial Intelligence & Bio: The Next Korea.' Six sessions took place in the following order: 'AI & Humanoid Robots,' 'Self-Driving Cars,' 'Wearable Robots & VR,' 'Drone & Robot Advisers,' 'Discover a Secret of Human Life (Red Bio),' and 'Open the Era of Bio-Economy (Bio Healthcare).' Ajou University Professor Kam Dong Gun (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) joined the panel discussion of the first session as a renowned artificial intelligence expert in South Korea. President Kim appeared onstage with greetings on the 12th prior to the third session and introduced Paran Semester saying, "There is an English proverb, ‘A smooth sea never made a skillful sailor.' Ajou University is encouraging students to take on challenges and find what they really want to do by allowing them to earn credits through their desired activities," adding, "I hope that the Forum will be an opportunity for the participants here to meet the challenges of the rise of artificial intelligence and bio." The University students invited to the event were able to listen to lectures at all the sessions free of charge.

The ‘Conversation with Professors’ event is held at Ajou to celebrate Teacher’s Day [16.05.13] On the occasion of Teacher’s Day on May 15th, the ‘Conversation with Professors’ event was held on the lawn in front of Ajou University's Seongho Hall. It marked the ninth annual event of its kind, which is designed to provide students and professors with opportunities for casual conversations outside the classroom. About 100 people, including the President, professors, and students from the University, took part through prior applications on the University website for ten days from May 3rd. Students attached carnation corsages to the professors along with offering their words of appreciation and enjoying conversations with professors in a relaxed setting. Earlier in the day, President Dong Yeon Kim had a luncheon with students from the General Student Council to commemorate Teacher’s Day. President Kim suggested, "We can have different views, but let us understand each other and strive for the development of the University." Students said, "We will relay student opinions to the University as they are," expressing their appreciation to the President by saying, "We are pleased to see the University continue its development."

The ceremony for launching the Unification Education Council for Southern Gyeonggi Province and a related workshop are held at Ajou [16.05.13] On the afternoon of May 12th, the ceremony for launching the Unification Education Council for Southern Gyeonggi Province and a related workshop were held at Ajou University's College Academic Building. President Dong Yeon Kim of the University is serving as the Chairman of the Council. The ceremony began with the presentation of Certificates of Appointment to 48 members of the Council, followed by a welcome speech by President Kim and congratulatory remarks by Director Seung Hun Jung of the Faculty Department from the Institute of Unification Education. In April, Ajou University was designated as the Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province by the Institute for Unification Education under the Ministry of Unification in the '2016 Regional Unification Education Centers Project.' Through the Project, President Kim is leading unification education programs as the Chairman of the Unification Education Council for Southern Gyeonggi Province. The Unification Education Center for Southern Gyeonggi Province is set to provide local citizens and students with opportunities to easily access unification-related programs, including Unification Lectures Involving Citizens, a Lecturing Tour for Local Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, and First-hand Experiences of Unification, etc. In addition, Ajou plans to contribute to building local unification infrastructure by spreading unification-related opinions among citizens through expert forums and workshops with the Unification Education Council members. President Kim said, "I would like to lead unification education in a pleasant and meaningful way by utilizing Ajou's strength in fact-based research so that it can help our local community in a realistic manner," adding, "I look forward to the efforts, enthusiasm, and support from the members of the Unification Education Council here as unification messengers." In his congratulatory remarks, Director Jung said, "I hope that the Council members will spread meaningful education throughout the community under the initiative of Ajou University." A workshop followed the ceremony, with professors and staff members from the University in attendance. During the workshop, Dr. Doo Hyeon Cha, a Special Advisor to Gyeonggi Provincial Government on International Policies and Visiting Researcher for the Korea Institute for National Unification, gave a lecture entitled "Unification Education Tasks in Korean Society: How to Overcome the Ideological Camps." After the lecture, participants actively exchanged their views during a Q&A session. Dr. Cha previously worked as Director for Exchanges and Cooperation at the Korea Foundation, Leader of the Crisis Management Team at Cheong Wa Dae, and a researcher at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses.

Interim exchange for Ajou's Paran Semester is held under the title of ‘Share Challenges & Experiences’ [16.05.13] On the afternoon of May 12th, an interim exchange for Ajou's Paran Semester was held under the title of ‘Share Challenges & Experiences’ at the Ajou University Outdoor Theater and Yulgok Hall's Video Conference Room. In the first part of the event held in the Video Conference Room, Paran Semester participants presented their activities and answered questions from others. Yeong Lim Ji (Department of Culture and Contents), a member of Team Shinabro participating in Paran Semester with web-based dramas, served as the MC. The presentations were given by eight students representing their respective teams. They introduced their teams' tasks and explained their progress so far, their main challenges, and their plans going forward, etc. Participants then shared their ideas and views in a casual setting. The second part was a beer party held at the Outdoor Theater. Students continued their exchanges over beer and chicken provided by Oriental Beer and Harim – both partner companies for Paran Semester. In his greetings, President Dong Yeon Kim cited The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, saying, "As Paran Semester participants, you are pioneers who chose not to follow the typical course of our society, but to confront challenges by taking the road not taken by others." President Kim went on to say, "I hope that many more Ajou students will join you for such a journey without fearing adventure and challenge."

Ajou's Department of Architecture celebrates its 30th anniversary [16.05.11] The Department of Architecture of Ajou University held an event to mark its 30th anniversary. The event, which was entitled "Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Department of Architecture and Homecoming Day," was held on April 29th and 30th at Yulgok Hall's Grand Auditorium and Seongho Hall Theater, etc. The celebration program began at 4 p.m. on April 29th, with about 250 students, Honorary Professor Don Soh Park and other professors, and graduates from the Department in attendance. It kicked off with a congratulatory speech read on behalf of President Dong Yeon Kim, followed by a congratulatory speech by Dean Sang Duk Lee of the College of Engineering, recollections by professors and graduates, the donation of the development fund, and a commemorative group photo. The event was an opportunity for all the people involved in the Department to look back on the past and reflect on future development. Homecoming Day, which began at 3 p.m. on April 30th at Seongho Hall Theater, was attended by about 100 graduates, professors, and students. The main program was followed by dinner at the square of Students Hall, in which the participants talked casually over food. During the event, the General Alumni Association of the Department of Architecture was established and Won Gyu Cho (entering class of 1987) was named President. At the same time, in commemoration of the 30th anniversary, professors and graduates donated to the development fund. The newly launched General Alumni Association contributed 20 million won and Honorary Professor Don Soh Park pledged to donate 10 million won per year for student scholarships. Professor Hae Seong Je promised to donate 10 million won and many others made smaller contributions. < The alumni representative delivers 20 million won in development funds to Director Kyu In Lee of the Department of Architecture.> < Graduates pose for a picture during the Homecoming Day dinner.>
