The orientation for the 2023 Ajou International Summer School (AISS) was held. The orientation event took place in Yeonam Hall on July 24 and was attended by about 60 students, including short-term exchange students for the summer school semester and global supporters. Among the attendees were 46 foreign students from 10 counties—Taiwan, Germany, Lithuania, Malyaia, United States, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Tunisia, and Finland—including 20 students from Ajou University in Tashkent (AUT).Participants of the AISS program will attend “Managing People in Organizations,” “Macroeconomics,” and “Korean Language” classes, earning three credits over two weeks.In addition, they will take classes on cooking traditional foods, K-Pop dance, and calligraphy and visit tourist destinations such as Suwon World Cup Stadium, Suwon Media Center, Yongin Everland, Bukchon Hanok Village, Lotte World Tower Seoul Sky, Korea’s East Sea, and Sokcho to gain a better understanding of Korean culture. Since the short-term programs of the Ajou International Summer School (AISS) started in 2000, a total of 17 sessions were held until 2016, with over 1,000 foreign students participating. After the AISS was suspended for three years, an international winter school was conducted online in 2020, during COVID-19, to resume the program.Last summer, the AISS program was held for 20 students of AUT, and this year it was opened to all universities with which Ajou has a sisterhood relationship.Meanwhile, in February 2021, AUT was opened, based on Ajou’s education system and expertise, on land and in a building provided by the Uzbekistan government. Currently, three departments—Civil Systems Engineering, Architecture, and Electrical and Computer Engineering—are being offered for first, second, and third-year students.

Ajou University ranked first among Korean universities in the 2023 Young University Rankings of Times Higher Education (THE), a UK university assessment institution. The Young University Rankings assesses universities worldwide that are 50 years old or younger, and Ajou University has been at the top of such Korean universities for three consecutive years. The 2023 THE Young University Rankings included 605 universities of 78 countries around the world. Performance was assessed across five indicators: teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income.In the rankings of young universities in Korea, Ajou University placed first among general universities. Three specialized universities—UNIST, POSTECH, and GIST—ranked first, second, and third, followed by Ajou in fourth. In the global rankings, Ajou once again placed in the 101-150th category, repeating its performance of last year.Founded in 1973, Ajou University marks its 50th anniversary this year, meaning that this is the last time it will be participating in the THE Young University Rankings. Ajou University has ranked among the world’s top 100 universities for the past three years. Its scores across five indicators have steadily improved, notably in research, citations, and international outlook, which showed continuous increases from 2018.The university has strived to recruit excellent faculty and strengthen its research by: launching an outstanding thesis award based on quality, increasing research funding for new faculty, and promoting international industry-university research. THE’s recognition of these efforts with high scores on the research and citations indicators shows that Ajou University has achieved advancement in its research. In addition, researchers of Ajou University have translated their R&D achievements into technology transfer income, posting an increase in industry income for six consecutive years.Furthermore, Ajou’s efforts on internationalization led to continuous progress every year in the assessment of international outlook. The Center for International Education attracted 612 foreign students from 35 countries, contributing to campus globalization. In addition, Ajou’s faculty members are increasing their collaborative research with overseas research institutions.THE has published the Young University Rankings since 2010, using performance indicators in teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), international outlook (7.5%), and industry income (2.5%). President Choi Kee-choo visited local universities and institutions in Singapore and Indonesia to discuss ways of engaging in exchanges and cooperation. From June 9 to 15, President Choi visited Singapore and Indonesia’s Jakarta and Bandung, where he met with key university officials. He was accompanied by Director Kang Shin-goo of the Office of International Affairs and other staff members. In Singapore, he met with Deputy President Ling San of Nanyang Technological University (NTU), a prestigious university of Singapore, and exchanged views on how to promote exchanges of researchers.In Indonesia, President Choi visited Universitas Indonesia, one of the country’s leading national universities, as well as Institut Teknologi Bandung, the oldest engineering university in Indonesia. He also met with officials of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Universitas Nasional, and Universitas TELKOM.President Choi had meetings with the presidents and key officials of these universities and toured various student spaces and research facilities. Representatives of Ajou and these universities discussed student exchange programs, including internships, an MOU for education and research cooperation, and ways to attract talented students through joint degree programs.During this visit, concrete achievements were made. Especially, Ajou University signed an MOU with Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and Universitas Nasional to increase cooperation in education and research. Under the agreement, Ajou will launch undergraduate and graduate student exchange programs with these two Indonesian universities and explore tasks for collaborative research, for which the scope of cooperation will be gradually broadened. When President Choi met with officials of Institut Teknologi Bandung, a prestigious engineering university in Indonesia, and Universitas Indonesia, he discussed various means of cooperation, including internship programs with Ajou University and Korean companies, exchanges of students during vacations, exchanges by college and department, and joint degree programs.President Choi and staff also met with high-ranking officials of the Indonesian government and discussed ways of engaging in cooperation in various sectors, including offering a joint scholarship with the Indonesian Ministry of Culture, Education, Research and Technology and opening jointly-funded scholarship programs between the Indonesian Ministry of Finance and Ajou University to attract Indonesian talents to Ajou University.Related departments and administrative staff of Ajou University will continue discussions, going into greater detail, regarding exchanges and cooperation with these universities in Singapore and Indonesia.A meeting with Ajou alumni in Jakarta was also arranged. Ajou University welcomed participants of the Korean International Education Administrators (KIEA) program, one of the Fullbright programs. The program is designed to promote the exchange of international education professionals of Korea and the United States.The 12 members of the group visited Ajou University on June 16. Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Kim Kyungrai, Director Kang Shin-goo of the Office of International Affairs, and others from Ajou University met with the group members and explained Ajou’s specialized programs, such as the Paran Semester and Paran Ladder, as well as its international programs and long-term university development plan.The American International Education Administrator (AIEA) program aims to expand the relationships between university administrators in the United States and Korea and promote international understanding and cooperation. The training group included staff of the United States’ top universities, including Duke University, Columbia University, and Emory University. Ajou University will discuss long-term exchanges and extended cooperation with these universities.The Fulbright Program was created to provide financial support for exchanges between universities in the United States and countries around the world, based on the suggestion of Senator J. William Fullbright that educational and cultural exchanges between peoples after the Second World War is the most effective means of promoting world peace. Currently, the Fullbright Program is operated in 160 countries, and the Korean-American Educational Commission (KAEC) is implementing various educational programs for students, professors, and specialists of Korea and the United States.

Ajou University was ranked among the top 101 to 200 universities for two consecutive years in the 2023 THE Impact Rankings published by Times Higher Education (THE), a UK global university assessment institution. Ajou University ranked fourth among the domestic universities that were assessed. THE announced the results of the 2023 THE Impact Rankings for 1,591 universities from 112 countries. This year’s rankings are the fifth edition, with a focus on universities’ social responsibility as a major assessment criterion. The impact rankings evaluate the efforts of universities to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were published by the United Nations in 2015. The SDGs comprise 169 targets across 17 goals in five categories—people, prosperity, planet, peace, and partnership—which are based on the aspirations of humanity as a whole. The SDGs were included in the required assessment items for the University Innovation Support Project (2022-2024) of the Ministry of Education, showing that the SDGs are being used as a standard for strengthening the social role of universities.Repeating its performance of last year, Ajou University was once again ranked among the top 101 to 200 universities this year. It ranked fourth among domestic universities participating in the assessment, rising by two places from sixth last year.The overall rankings are determined by summing the scores in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) and the three highest scores among the remaining 16 SDGs. Ajou University was in the top 100 for two of the SDGs, receiving favorable assessments for SDG 1 (No Poverty, 52nd), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, 88th), and SDG 4 (Quality Education, 101-200th). In SDG 1 (No Poverty), Ajou University was ranked 52nd, showing recognition of the validity of its programs and policy proposals to end poverty in communities and around the world. In addition, in SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), where the university ranked in 101 to 200th, Ajou was at the top in Korea, along with Kyung Hee University and Kyungpook National University. The assessment measures research on social inequality, recruitment of employees and students from among socially-disadvantaged groups, and proportion of students from emerging countries. Ajou University installed the Ajou Sustainable Development Goals Center in 2020 and has integrated the pursuit of the SDGs into its development plan. The center is dedicated to promoting the SDGs through the operation of a sustainable development leader training course, implementation of “Paran Semester” projects, publication of Ajou Sustainable Development Reports, and conducting of the Ajou Eco Challenge campaign.In addition, in the first semester of this year, Ajou University opened the D[KH1]epartment of Convergence ESG in the Graduate School of Engineering to cultivate convergence experts capable of generating environmental, social, and governance value through engineering. Meanwhile, in the 2023 impact rankings, universities dedicated to the economy, society, environmental preservation, and universal welfare were ranked higher. The overall ranking was led by Australia’s Western Sydney University. Among Korean universities, Yonsei University (14th), Kyung Hee University (42nd), and Kyungpook National University (42nd) were among the top 100 universities.

The Ajou University Graduate School of International Studies was awarded an appreciation plaque by the World Bank Korea Office at the latter's 10th anniversary celebration in recognition of the former's contributions to the energy industry, specifically its running of the master's degree program under the Korea International Cooperation Agency's (KOICA) energy policy.The World Bank Korea Office held its 10th anniversary celebration at the Fairmont Ambassador Seoul on May 24, where it shared its achievements and future plans. A number of cooperating institutions were honored with appreciation plaques at the event.The Ajou University Graduate School of International Studies received an appreciation plaque for its successful partnership with the World Bank Korea Office and other agencies in the field of energy. The graduate school has been operating a master's degree program under KOICA's energy policy, which was developed by KOICA to produce experts on the energy policy of developing countries. The master's degree program has been offered at the Ajou University Graduate School of International Studies since 2017 with annual funding of KRW 900 million. At present, there are 20 students from 14 countries enrolled in the program.The program includes such components as energy independence, energy industry development, green growth, climate change response, and energy education and training. Students who complete the 17-month program graduate with a master’s in energy science policy.The students enrolled in the program are government employees involved in the field of energy in their respective countries who will likely return to their posts upon graduation to apply their newly acquired energy expertise.Department Chair Jung Yonghun of the Ajou University Graduate School of International Studies expressed his gratitude to "all members of the Graduate School of International Studies and everyone who made the running of the program possible," adding that "the best of efforts will be made to improve Ajou University, now celebrating its 50th anniversary, as well as the Graduate School of International Studies and the programs offered."

Ajou University President Choi Kee-choo talked with Senior Vice President Ben Sowter of Quacquarelli Symonds at the Asian Leadership Conference 2023.Hosted by The Chosun Ilbo, a Korean daily newspaper, the Asian Leadership Conference marks its 14th run this year. This year's event was held from May 17 to 18 under the theme of “The Era of Upheaval: The Road to Collaboration and Innovation.” On the afternoon of May 18, President Choi talked with Senior Vice President Sowter for about an hour on "the role of the university in saving the world." Quacquarelli Symonds is a British company that specializes in the analysis of higher education institutions around the world. President Choi introduced Senior Vice President Sowter to the audience, and Sowter gave a presentation on how universities can help protect the world. The two then engaged in an interview and answered questions from the audience. The entire event was conducted in English.Citing as an example the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, a feat accomplished in only 10 months and made possible through the participation of universities around the world, Senior Vice President Sowter said that universities are producing research outcomes and making innovations that save lives and make the world a better place. He explained that a focus of Quacquarelli Symonds in assessing universities is the discovery and recognition of universities that are capable or have potential in such research and innovation.Sowter said, "Korean universities are more sensitive to change and make decisions faster compared to universities in other countries," but that "they are skewed toward American universities in joint research in an era where global cooperation is needed."He said Korean universities needed cultural reform to move forward with global cooperation, and that they should move away from the ingrained competition among themselves and embrace sharing and cooperation.President Choi sought Senior Vice President Sowter's views on strategies that individual universities could adopt in the face of the falling school-age population and rapidly changing internal and external conditions of universities. Sowter then answered questions from the audience about university rankings and competition, university assessment, deindividuation of universities, limits and opportunities of online education, and other topics.One of the founding members of Quacquarelli Symonds, Senior Vice President Sowter is a higher education expert who has been involved in the QS World University Rankings for almost 20 years.Other notable speakers at the Asian Leadership Conference 2023 included former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Prime Minister of Malaysia Mahathir Mohamad, former UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon, 77th UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, KakaoPay CEO Shin Wonkeun, Green Climate Fund Advisor Jeffrey Lamb, and 25th Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

Only 36 years old at the time, Professor Novoselov was thrust into the limelight.An artificial nanomaterial, graphene is widely regarded as an advanced material that overcomes the limits of silicon. Lightweight, transparent, flexible, strong, and conductive, graphene is ideal for use in displays, semiconductors, solar cells, cars, aircraft, and more.Ajou University held a variety of events this year to honor its 50th anniversary. A Korean speech contest was held in commemoration of Ajou University's 50th anniversary. The event was intended to promote a sense of academic achievement among international students at Ajou University, help them adapt to university life, and motivate them in their academic endeavors.The contest was held in the auditorium of the Yeonam Hall at 11 a.m. on May 3. In attendance were 350 international students, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Kim Kyungrai, Director Kang Shin-goo of the Office of International Affairs, Director Lee Dong Ryeol of the International Education Center, and other university officials.The event started with an opening address and proceeded with speeches by participants, divided into beginner and intermediate/advanced levels; entertainment; a prize giveaway; and speeches by the winners. The event concluded with photo-taking.The three groups of participants competed in the preliminary and main events. The preliminary event was judged ahead of the contest by assessing the scripts prepared by the participants. Forty-eight international students participated in the preliminary, 10 of whom took to the stage on the day of the contest.The topics of the speeches delivered by the students ranged from life in Korea, such as "Korea and My Dreams" and "Life in Korea," to society and politics, such as "Korea's Low Birth Rate Problem," "The Conflict in Myanmar," and "Technological Development and Our Future." The judges for the event were Professor of Korean Language and Literature Mun Hye-won, Professor of Global Culture Hwang Sunyoung, and International Education Center Instructor Kwon Ju-yeon, all from Ajou University, who judged the participants on the originality of their scripts, script-speech consistency, appropriacy of vocabulary and expressions, and other qualities. The first prize went to Khit Min from Myanmar, who delivered a speech on the conflict in Myanmar at the intermediate/advanced level. Min took away KRW 800,000 in prize money.The two second prize co-winners were Moe Yati Zaw and Phyo Thu Pyae, both from Myanmar, who addressed the audience under the titles "Technological Development and Our Future" and "Korea and My Dreams," respectively. The third prize was shared by Tran Khuyen Ngoc from Vietnam and Elaheh from Iran for their respective speeches titled "Life in Korea" and "The Scent of Freedom."When asked for a comment, first prize winner Khit Min said to "please support Myanmar students who are studying hard in Korea under difficult circumstances" and "show continuing interest in the situation in Myanmar."The first semester of this year marks the all-time largest number of international students enrolled at Ajou University, at 612. They come from 35 countries, including Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Russia, Mongolia, India, and Indonesia. Ajou University held the “Ajou Vision 2023” time capsule opening ceremony on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The time capsule that was opened had been prepared and buried along with the declaration of the “Ajou Vision 2023” university development plan in November 2008. The purpose of the event was to review the university’s achievements, direction, and desires in terms of its development and the preparations that need to be made for its future.On the morning of April 4, the time capsule opening took place in front of Yulgok Hall with over 100 participants, including students, professors, and staff. The opening of the time capsule was followed by an explanation of its contents and remarks by the president. The time capsule was opened, on behalf of the Ajou family, by President Choi Kee-choo; Lee Hyo-seong, president of the Student Council; Kim Kyungrai, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs; Lee Seon-yi, library director; Im Sang-hyeon, director of the Planning and Coordination Division of Ajou University Hospital; Lee Jae-ho, president of the Professors’ Council; Cho Jae-hyeon, president of the labor union; and Kim Dong-seok, dormitory director.The time capsule contained 20 items that reflect the goals of Ajou Vision 2023, “a world-class university taking the lead in convergence discipline.” They include booklets and a declaration of “Ajou Vision 2023,” a university master plan, final application for the construction of the law school, permit for such construction, official document providing the results of the preliminary assessment for engineering education accreditation, and status and photos taken of the university at the time.At the ceremony, students read the letters that were found in the time capsule, written by the students who buried it in 2008.Lee Dong-hyeon (electronics, 2019) read the letter written by Wu Hye-rim (College of Humanities, 2004), followed by Lee Eun-gyeong (architecture, 2021) reading the letter by Kim Jeong-hun (school of business, 2003) and Lee Da-yun (digital media, 2022) reading the letter by Cho Hyeong-jun (bio-engineering, 2007). The letters expressed the students’ expectations for changes on campus and wishes for the university’s development and told their stories to and shared their hopes with juniors. President Choi, in his commemorative remarks, said, “Marking its 50th anniversary, Ajou University is planning many physical changes in the campus master plan, including the construction of the AU50 Convergence Hall. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our professors and staff, who have worked so hard over the past 50 years to make Ajou University what it is today." Ajou University marks its 50th anniversary on April 12, for which it has prepared various commemorative projects under the slogan “A+ for the World.” During the week of the 50th anniversary (April 10 to 14), the ai (Ajou Innovations) Festival will be held. President Choi Kee-choo’s interview with the Dong-A Ilbo regarding the 50th anniversary of Ajou University, as well as the university’s achievements, vision, and goals, was carried in the March 3 issue of the newspaper. President Choi described the achievements of Ajou University and commemorative projects for the 50th anniversary; explained how Ajou achieved the best graduate employment rate among domestic universities; spoke about the university’s technology commercialization efforts and internationalization strategy, including Ajou University in Tashkent (AUT); and highlighted the vision of Ajou University and its efforts toward that end.
